Heavy Weight Penetrometer - Geotechnical Studies - Group Tesla Engineering | GTE
In-Situ Geotechnical Tests

When the load is serious, the test needs to be too

The Heavy Weight Penetrometer Test extends dynamic penetration testing to greater depths and denser soil conditions than lighter equipment can reach — giving our engineers reliable strength and bearing capacity data for medium to heavy structures, and sites with compact or resistant soil layers

What the Test Involves

A heavier calibrated hammer is dropped from a fixed height onto a driving rod and cone tip, driven progressively into the ground. Blow counts per depth interval are recorded and correlated to soil density, relative strength, and bearing capacity — extending reliably deeper and through firmer strata than a light penetrometer can manage

Where We Use It

  • Bearing capacity assessment for medium and heavy structures
  • Investigation of dense or compacted soil and fill layers
  • Sites where lighter penetrometer testing reaches refusal too early
  • Verification testing on larger embankments and infrastructure works

Why It Matters

Underestimating soil resistance at depth is one of the more expensive mistakes a foundation design can make. The HWPT gives us the penetration force needed to read dense ground accurately, so bearing capacity recommendations for heavier structures are based on what the soil can genuinely support — not an extrapolation from shallower data

What You Get

A documented blow-count and depth profile, interpreted by our engineers into bearing capacity and soil density findings, incorporated into your project's geotechnical report
